What is hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is sweat production beyond what the body needs for temperature control. It can affect daily life, clothing choices and social situations. The underarms, palms and soles are most often involved.
What botulinum toxin does
It temporarily reduces transmission at the nerve endings that stimulate sweat glands, markedly lowering sweat production in the treated area. The effect begins within 3–7 days and lasts 6–9 months on average.
The procedure
The area may be mapped with a starch-iodine test. The skin is prepared with topical anaesthetic or cooling, then injected superficially in a grid with very fine needles. The underarms take 20–30 minutes.
An important note
Excessive sweating can sometimes stem from thyroid disease, infection or medication. Widespread sweating that continues at night should be investigated for those causes first; the consultation makes that distinction.
