What is a non-surgical brow lift?
With age the tail of the eyebrow tends to descend, which can make the gaze look tired and create a sense of heaviness in the upper lid. A non-surgical brow lift combines two mechanisms in this region: balancing the muscles that pull the brow downwards, and supporting the tissue beneath the brow tail with collagen-stimulating agents. Agents such as polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly-L-lactic acid do not add instant volume like a filler; instead they prompt the body to build its own collagen over several weeks.
The components of the treatment
Planning differs from person to person. For some, balancing the depressor muscles at the outer eye is enough; for others, the tissue beneath the brow tail needs additional support. In practice the two approaches are often combined.
How does it work?
A collagen-stimulating agent triggers a controlled remodelling response within the tissue. Fibroblasts are activated and new collagen production increases over four to eight weeks, making the tissue that carries the brow tail more resilient. Unlike filler, the effect is not immediate — it emerges gradually, which gives a softer transition.
How the session goes
Assessment
Brow height, the strength of the forehead muscles, the condition of the eyelid skin and the difference between the two sides are measured. A degree of brow asymmetry is natural in almost everyone; the aim is not to force symmetry but to reduce the difference.
The procedure
The skin is cleansed and topical anaesthetic cream may be applied. The agent is placed in the planned layer with a fine needle or cannula, after which the area is gently massaged so the product spreads evenly. The session takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
What to expect afterwards
Mild swelling, redness and occasionally bruising may occur on the day. With collagen stimulators you will be asked to massage the area several times a day for the first five days so the product distributes evenly. Results are usually noticeable from week four and become clearer at eight to twelve weeks. Duration varies with the product and the individual; most people are reassessed within twelve to eighteen months.
Who should avoid it
The treatment is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active infection at the site, in people allergic to the product components, in uncontrolled autoimmune disease, in those prone to keloid scarring, or in bleeding disorders. Where there is significant excess skin on the upper lid the expected benefit is limited, and we discuss eyelid surgery as an alternative.
Expectations and follow-up
Because even small changes in this region alter the expression of the gaze, planning proceeds cautiously. The goal of a first session is not a dramatic change in brow height but support for the tissue that carries the brow tail. The result is assessed at the review four to six weeks later, and a second session planned if required. The name, quantity and layer of the agent used are recorded in your file. As the relationship between brow and eyelid changes over time, reassessment within twelve to eighteen months is advised — and at that visit the balance of the forehead muscles is reviewed alongside the brow.
Planning takes place at a face-to-face examination where the relationship between brow and eyelid is measured.
Aftercare
- Massage the area several times a day for the first five days, as instructed.
- Avoid sport, sauna and hot showers on the day of treatment.
- No make-up for the first 24 hours.
- Continue daily sun protection.
- Cold compresses may be used on the first day for swelling.
- Attend the review appointment four to six weeks later.
Frequently asked about this treatment
With collagen-stimulating agents the change is gradual. A first difference is usually noticed from week four, and the clearer result at eight to twelve weeks. Unlike filler, no immediate fullness is expected — which is what makes the transition look natural.
Some brow asymmetry is natural in most people and complete symmetry is not the goal; the aim is to reduce the difference. At examination we distinguish whether the asymmetry arises from muscle, bone structure or the eyelid, as each responds differently.
