What do scalp treatments aim for?

Hair loss rarely has a single cause: genetic predisposition, hormonal change, iron and vitamin D deficiency, thyroid disease, stress and certain medications all play a part. Hair mesotherapy and PRP aim to support the environment in which existing follicles live. They do not bring back follicles that have already closed, so setting realistic expectations matters.

Difference between the two treatments

Hair mesotherapy uses prepared solutions containing biotin, panthenol, amino acids, peptides and trace elements. PRP uses platelet-rich plasma separated from your own blood. The two can be planned together or alternated.

How does it work?

Micro-injections into the scalp work in two ways: they support circulation around the follicle and, through growth factors, contribute to keeping the follicle in its active growth phase. In PRP, the growth factors released by platelets target the region where follicular stem cells sit. Response varies between individuals and depends on the type and duration of the hair loss.

How the session goes

Assessment

The pattern of loss is examined, with dermatoscopy where needed. Tests such as ferritin, thyroid function, vitamin D and B12 may be requested, because treatments carried out without correcting these deficiencies deliver less than expected.

The procedure

The scalp is cleansed with antiseptic and injections are placed with very fine needles about a centimetre apart. A session takes 20 to 30 minutes; with PRP, including blood draw and centrifugation, it reaches 40 to 45 minutes. After a course of four to six sessions, maintenance is usually planned every three to six months.

What to expect afterwards

Tenderness and redness of the scalp for a few hours are normal. We advise not washing the hair on the day and washing gently with lukewarm water the following day. Hair dye, chemical processing and tightly pulled hairstyles should be avoided for 48 hours. Results can usually be assessed from the third month; photographic follow-up is recommended.

Who should avoid it

Treatment is not performed with active scalp infection, eczema or a psoriasis flare, in bleeding or clotting disorders, with a low platelet count (for PRP), during active cancer treatment, or in people allergic to the solution's components. It is not preferred during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Sudden, diffuse hair loss requires investigation of the underlying cause first.

Expectations and follow-up

Assessing change in hair takes time; because of the hair cycle, newly emerging strands are usually only visible around the third month. Photographs are therefore taken at the first session and repeated under the same conditions at three and six months. Session dates, the solution used and the areas treated are recorded in your file. After the initial course, maintenance sessions can be planned every three to six months. If an underlying deficiency or condition has been identified, proceeding with sessions alone without treating it is not appropriate — the two run in parallel.

The treatment plan is built after a face-to-face assessment that includes your test results.
