What is lip filler?
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and binds water. Lip filler uses cross-linked, gel-form versions of this molecule made specifically for lip tissue. The aim is not a larger lip but the volume and border definition that suit the person's facial proportions.
What is assessed?
The consultation looks at upper-to-lower lip ratio, the sharpness of the vermilion border, philtrum height, the amount of gum shown when smiling, and the direction of the lip corners. Age-related volume loss and a naturally thin lip need different planning.
How is it done?
The area is sensitive, so a topical anaesthetic is applied first, and a regional block may be used. The product is placed gradually into the planned layers with a very fine needle or a blunt cannula. The session usually takes 20–30 minutes.
What to expect afterwards
Swelling — and occasionally bruising — is normal for the first 24–48 hours, during which the lip looks fuller than it will settle. The final result is visible at two weeks. Duration averages 8–12 months depending on the product and the individual.
Who is it not suitable for?
It is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when there is active herpes or infection at the site, in people with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, during an active phase of autoimmune disease, or in bleeding disorders. Preventive treatment may be planned for those with frequent cold sores.
