What is ozone therapy?

Ozone is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms. Medical ozone is produced from medical-grade oxygen using dedicated generators and used at carefully controlled doses. In Türkiye ozone applications are governed by the Regulation on Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices and may only be carried out by physicians holding a Ministry of Health certificate, in licensed units.

Forms of application

The most common forms are major autohaemotherapy (ozonating drawn blood and returning it), minor autohaemotherapy, local application with a bagging technique, rectal insufflation and topical care with ozonated oil. Which method is appropriate is decided by the physician according to the individual case.

How does it work?

At a controlled dose, ozone creates a brief and measured oxidative stimulus in cells. This stimulus activates the body's antioxidant defence systems, such as glutathione and superoxide dismutase. Effects supporting oxygen delivery to tissue and repair processes have also been described. Dose is decisive here: a higher dose is not more beneficial but harmful.

How the session goes

Assessment

A medical history is taken, with particular attention to thyroid disease, G6PD deficiency, pregnancy and bleeding disorders. Any necessary tests are requested. The session plan and duration are set individually.

The procedure

In major autohaemotherapy, blood is drawn into a sterile closed-system bottle, mixed with an ozone-oxygen mixture at the prescribed dose and returned slowly through the same venous line. The whole appointment takes 30 to 45 minutes; local applications are shorter. You remain under observation throughout.

What to expect afterwards

Mild tiredness or a sense of relaxation may be reported after a session and is usually short-lived. Tenderness at the cannula site can last a few hours. Drinking plenty of water is advised. The frequency and total number of sessions are determined by the physician; like any procedure, ozone is considered as part of an overall treatment plan.

Who should avoid it

Ozone therapy is not performed in G6PD deficiency (favism), hyperthyroidism, pregnancy, active bleeding or severe anaemia, after a recent myocardial infarction, or in uncontrolled chronic disease. Ozone is never given by inhalation, as it is toxic to lung tissue. All medication you take must be disclosed.

Expectations and follow-up

In ozone therapy the dose, the frequency and the total number of sessions are set in advance and recorded in the file; the idea that more sessions produce a better result is not correct. Blood pressure and general condition are monitored during the session. As the sessions progress we review together how your complaints have changed and update the plan if needed. I would emphasise that ozone therapy does not replace the investigation of an undiagnosed complaint: where an underlying condition is possible, appropriate medical assessment comes first.

The decision to treat follows a face-to-face examination in which your history and any required tests are reviewed.

Aftercare

  • Drink plenty of water during the rest of the day.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of the session.
  • Do not apply pressure to the cannula site.
  • Inform your physician of any change in your medication.
  • If you feel dizzy, sit down and let the clinic know.
  • Keep to the planned intervals between sessions.
